From Jamie’s Desk:
In 20-something hours, the Winter Olympics opening ceremony will take place in Milan. If you’re anything like me, this is something you have been looking forward to for years. Personally, I love the winter and summer games equally, and with them coming to LA in just over two years, my Olympic fever is high. This year, I am even making the trip over to Milan to check out some of the events–which I am really excited for (I’m also obviously hyped to eat in Milan). I’m a little annoyed that the events are so far from each other–hockey/figure skating/speed skating are almost six hours from skiing and curling–but it is what it is. So when you're driving the hour to a venue in LA, remember that. However, I can't focus fully on the Olympics yet, as we have a much bigger event in the US before Olympic fever can truly take over: Sunday’s Super Bowl.
Usually, the Super Bowl wouldn't be so unifying, since many people don’t care if their team doesn’t make it in. But anytime the Patriots are playing, that changes. We’re living through a time where everyone is desperate for something to rally around, and collectively rooting against the Patriots is just what we needed. There are few teams that people like less than New England, so I can safely say that regardless of politics, the nation is unified this weekend. With everything going on in our country, being able to root for the Seahawks in the Super Bowl and Team USA in the Olympics, is just what the doctor ordered.
I also have to mention the Grammy’s. Congratulations to Jamie’s List member Ben Winston on another amazing show. Some of my favorite moments were:
1) Everything with Trevor Noah and Bad Bunny
2) Lola Young’s performance of Messy
3) Best new artist medley (no surprise, I love everything Olivia Dean is part of)
4) The Clipse and Pharrell performance
5) Tyler the Creator blowing himself up
I know there were many people angry about the number of artists who used the event to speak on politics, either in their speeches or by wearing ICE OUT pins. Personally, I think it was a perfect use of their platform. Olivia Dean said it best, "I'm up here as a granddaughter of an immigrant…I'm a product of bravery, and I think those people deserve to be celebrated."
As the grandson of immigrants, I 100% agree with her.

📍San Francisco
For those of you in San Fran for the big game, if you haven't made reservations at Kokkari or Cotogna–you are out of luck. However, San Fran does offer a lot of great casual options for a quick bite, and there’s always take-out or delivery apps.

Ferry Building
This historic food hall and shopping center is always a must-visit when I’m in SF. The wide variety of options, and the farmer’s market, make this a hub. Plus, it’s conveniently located on a streetcar route for those of you wanting the full San Francisco experience.
Gott’s Roadside – Burgers, fries, chicken tenders, and more–this growing chain spot has the classics for those craving something simple. They don’t take reservations, but do offer pick-up or delivery.
Hog Island Oyster Company – It’s right in the name, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that this place is known for their oysters. Grilled, raw, or in stew–they’ve got it all. It’s walk-in only, and they have take-out.
Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream – For those with a sweet tooth, this is a great place to grab a scoop. They offer local delivery for pints and ice cream cakes, but for individual scoops I’d recommend getting it from their Ferry building location.
Lunette – This Cambodian spot was recently featured on Netflix’s Chef Table, and can be found in suite 33 at the Ferry building. If you’re craving some noodles or rice, be sure to stop by. They’re walk-in friendly and you can order online for pick-up if you’re in a rush.
Beyond
It’s a big city, there are plenty of other spots. Here are my top picks for some last-minute bites, either walk-in only or places that miraculously still have reservations.

La Taqueria – This James Beard Award winning Mexican spot is known for their burritos. Be prepared to wait in a long line, but once you try their food you’ll get why. Pro-tip: ask for the tortilla to be crispy. Cash only.
Lucca Deli – Sandwiches are the perfect grab-and-go food for exploring San Francisco, and Lucca has been serving them up since 1929, in the same former garage as when they started. This Italian spot has groceries too, and they offer pick-up and delivery.
Mission Chinese – There are still reservations available at Danny Bowien’s unique Chinese spot, which has dishes like kung pao pastrami, broccoli beef brisket, and sichuan carbonara. They also offer delivery or take-out for those of you who want to eat on-the-go.
Palette Tea House – I couldn’t write about SF without highlighting at least one dim sum place, and this is a good one. They still have some reservations, but also do walk-in, take-out, and delivery.

Swan Oyster Depot – It’s hard not to recommend Swan when you are in SF, but it’s worth noting that there’s always a line. For those of you up for some raw seafood at 8 a.m., your best bet is getting there bright and early. This 18-seat counter is truly the definition of no-frills dining. Anthony Bourdain was a regular here, and it’s known for their raw bar selections. They don’t even have a website and don’t take reservations, but it’s worth trying to snag a seat.
📍Los Angeles
Most people prefer to enjoy the big game from the comfort of their homes, surrounded by friends, family and good food. For those sticking around in LA, here are some places I recommend for game day bites. Some have special menus for the Super Bowl, others are just kick-ass catering spots. All are bound to be crowd pleasers.
APL BBQ – Barbecue is a classic option for Super Bowl Sunday, and Adam Perry Lang is offering three options to make your party great. Pre-order ASAP, and pick up in Marina Del Rey between 12-2 pm on game day.

Bay Cities Italian Deli – The Godmother is arguably the best Italian sandwich in LA, so getting a bunch of those for the big game is a must. Add on some meatballs, fresh mozzarella, and crusty bread–I can’t think of anything better. They accept online and phone orders, or you can brave the line. Pick up only.

Scott Galloway is unsubscribing–and you should too.
In this conversation, Scott and I discussed his new movement Resist & Unsubscribe. The goal is to use our wallets to enact real change, and hit the CEOs who are facilitating Trump’s rogue administration where it hurts.
Scott highlights why now is the time to make these moves, the actual impact it can have, and how the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti served as the catalyst for this movement.
It’s not an easy task, giving up conveniences and entertainment—but it’s been proven time and time again that while leaders may not listen to people taking to the streets, they’re beholden to capitalism. Economic drawbacks work, and targeting Big Tech is a good place to start.

📕 I’m once again recommending Takeover: Hitler’s Final Rise to Power by Timothy W. Ryback. I can’t think of a more important book for this time.
🏂 The Winter Olympics opening ceremony is streaming on NBC and Peacock Friday, February 6th, at 11 am PT.
