From Jamie’s Desk:
Labor Day came and went, which means fall is officially here. As much as I love summer, by mid-August I’m always raring to go, eager for inboxes to clear and routines to return (I know we all try and get time away from our emails during the summer, but can we all agree to never use an out of office email again, it’s enough already). That said, this summer was full of highlights––including my daughter home from college. When your first child leaves for school, it completely reshuffles the family dynamic, so having her back feels like a whole new rhythm. Most of the time it’s great, though it’s safe to say she wasn’t always happy with my daily nagging. At least at school she can escape it. Having her back made saying goodbye all the more bittersweet when she returned to campus.
Along with family time, I was lucky to attend some summer weddings that took me to Europe, not once, but twice. I was even able to make a quick trip to the Hamptons to be with family for a bit. With so many highlights from the summer, it’s hard to pick a favorite, but here are a few:
Seeing Giant in London, followed by meals at Kiln, The Devonshire, Tamil Prince and Em Sharif (that rice pudding might be one of the best bites in the world).
The Hockney show in Paris with meals at L’ami Louis, Le Duc, Terroirs D’Avenue and Caractère de Cochon.
A whirlwind NYC trip that included meals at Penny, Sunn’s, Ha’s Snack Bar and of course Yi Ji Shi Mo. Plus, I got to see Ginger Twinsies, Twelfth Night at Shakespeare in the Park, Purpose and Maybe Happy Endings.
A trip to the Hamptons that was capped with my favorite meal of the summer with my brothers and Rich Kleiman. This was a great reminder that it is critical to spend time with friends and family and continue to nurture those relationships. It isn't about the quantity of time you spend with loved ones, but the quality.
And of course, spending time in my favorite city in the world, LA. The summer consisted of meals at Malibu Seafood, hikes, ocean swims with the LA Tri Club, the unbeatable farmers market produce, art walks and hanging with the family.
Looking ahead, there are so many great things to be excited about this fall: the premiere of Roofman at TIFF this Saturday, screenings in New York and Charlotte, the US release on October 10th, and the London Film Festival on October 14th. There are also some powerful Lunch With Jamie conversations on the horizon––with Kara Swisher, James Talarico, Jake Auchincloss, Sarah McBride, Mark Kelly and more. And of course, the Baby2Baby gala honoring Serena Williams.
Despite the positive moments this summer, it’s hard to ignore everything going on in the world right now. In the US, we’re facing ICE raids, the mobilization of the National Guard in our cities, and the rewriting of American history. Voting rights are in jeopardy, and the departments meant to keep us safe and healthy are led by anti-science conspiracy theorists. Globally, wars rage on and tensions remain high. I still believe in the good of humanity––but it would be a lie to say these things don’t keep me up at night. As we are only 7 months into the Trump administration, it is safe to say the next few years are going to be unpredictable, but as an eternal optimist, I will continue to try and remain positive about what’s ahead––as long as we all stick together.

📍Paris: Caractère de Cochon
Cuisine: Sandwich
Crew: Adam Saper, Ben Hundreds, Brian McGinn, Matt Haimes, Aaron Stern
Good For: Casual, Take Out, No Reservations
Pro Tip: Make sure you get a couple of sandwiches to share. At least one pure Jambon Beurre, one with cheese, and one salami (even if you are just one person).
What to Order: Jambon Beurre, Salami Beurre, a side of Cornichons
Notes: Jambon Beurre is arguably one of my favorite sandwiches in the world. It is so simple yet so good. It is exactly what it says: ham and butter. Now if you are like me, you enjoy some additional condiments on your sandwich––maybe dijon mustard, some mayonnaise, maybe a pickle. And you are not wrong, those are all delicious additions to a sandwich, but not on a Jambon Beurre. While they do offer a few different cheese options, whatever you do don't try and add dijon. As a first timer I made that mistake and the nice lady behind the counter scoffed at me, rightly so. How dare I defile the perfect French sandwich. I am definitely not qualified to say which is the best Jambon Beurre in Paris, but this one will be hard to beat.

📍London: Tamil Prince
Cuisine: Indian Pub Food
Crew: Brian McGinn, Eli Meyer, Nick Tran, Conde Nast Traveler, Michelin Guide, Infatuation
Good For: Date Night, Dinner with Friends, Date Night, Business Dinner, Casual
Pro Tip: Don’t forget about their sister restaurant, the Tamil Crown!
What to Order: Okra Fries, Chicken Lollipop, Masala Dosa, King Prawn, Robata Lamb Chops, Chettinad Lamb Curry, Thanjavur Chicken Curry, Dal Makhani, Indian Desai Salad, Channa Bhatura
Notes: I had no idea what to expect from this place. Something I have come to realize about people who live in London is that they are possibly the most neighborhood biased people of any city I know. I learned this summer that anytime you ask for a local’s favorite restaurant, they give you restaurants in their neighborhood and the surrounding neighborhoods. So when I suggested Tamil Prince to my friend in South Kensington, I was met with silence on the other end of the phone. Well his loss, this place is special. A traditional London Pub serving arguably some of the best Indian food in London. The menu is small so if you go with 6 people, you can order everything.

📍Los Angeles: Carmel
Cuisine: Mediterranean
Crew: Ben Hundreds, David Nathanson, Joseph Varet, Kate Burr, Lloyd Sacks, Matt Karatz, Chris Rice, Andy Wang, Eater, Infatuation
Good For: Dinner with Friends, Date Night, Business Dinner
Pro Tip: Similar to The Benjamin, this is a great place to have an early or late dinner before or after a show on Melrose––such a perfect LA night. If you are really adventurous, you can even walk the 1 mile to The Grove for a movie.
What to Order: Moroccan Frena (bread), Farmer’s Market Hummus, San Diego Bluefin Tuna, Peruvian Sea Scallops, Kampachi Crudo, Green Salad, Woodfire Octopus, Kentucky Fried Kampachi Wings, Shrimp Spahettini, Red Snapper Schnitzel
Notes: Opened just over a year ago, this is a wonderful addition to the Melrose Arts District (from Fairfax to Highland). Inspired by one of my favorite dining experiences in the world “Shuk HaCarmel” in Tel Aviv, chef Asaf Maoz puts his Italian and Syrian heritage on full display. One of the best qualities of this restaurant is that there is something for everyone. The dish that continues to get the most hype is the Snapper Schnitzel, but that is just the beginning. They have some of the freshest ingredients in the city, and it is one of the only places ever where I saw a salad being prepared while at the counter. It’s great for a group, but also a great place to sit at the bar solo and watch the chefs work. Make sure to order the wings before you sit down. Also, this group owns Pita Bu in Malibu and are opening a pizza place there as well.

📍Los Angeles: Tacos Frontera (reviewed by Ben Hundreds)
Cuisine: Mexican
Crew: Jamie Patricof, Jordan Okun, Kate Burr, James Ponsoldt, Infatuation, NY Times, Eater
Good For: Casual, No Reservations, Take Out
Pro Tip: I always ask for my tacos con todo, which adds a nice cilantro cream and slice of pineapple!
What to Order: Al Pastor everything
Notes: This taqueria in Cypress Park has taken the city by storm. They're on top of every list you can imagine and got a solid review in the NY Times recently. The owner comes from a family of taqueros in Tijuana and he really knows what he's doing. When I think of getting tacos, I can't help but to drive out to Cypress Park for al pastor and vampiros from Taqueria Frontera.

We discussed Trump’s failing health, who JD Vance really is, Newsom’s unorthodox social media strategy, which line gets the most applause at Bernie’s rallies, what we should be paying attention to, and much more.
